ILOILO CITY, May 09 – The Iloilo City Police Office here tagged as an isolated case a grenade explosion outside the house of congressional bet Raul Gonzales Jr. and former Justice secretary Raul Gonzales Sr. in Brgy. Quintin Salas, Jaro district around 1:00 to 2:00 AM on Thursday, May 9.
However, ICPO Chief Supt. Ruperto Floro said the incident was reported to the Jaro police station at around 8:00 in the morning of the same day.
City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog condemned the explosion and called on the police to conduct an investigation immediately. But the city mayor also branded the incident as a cheap political gimmick of their opponents if used as a reason to place the city under a watchlist or even under Comelec control.
Floro said that although the whole city is not included on the police and Comelec election watchlist and area of concern, Jaro district had some incidents in the past 2010 election that merits close surveillance.
Floro said the police investigators headed by Supt. Uldarico Garbanzos, deputy city director for operations, recovered a safety lever of F6A126 fragmentation grenade at the scene of the incident outside the concrete fence of the Gonzalez residence.
No one was hurt by the explosion but Floro assured an investigation is ongoing as part of the police safety preparations for Monday, May 13 midterm elections.
Floro acknowledged that city is generally peaceful, orderly and stable with no untoward or criminal incidents to mar the elections. (PNA)
