Aquino backs Legarda's senatorial bid despite black propaganda

MANILA, May 6 — President Benigno Aquino III on Monday expressed full support to re-electionist Senator Loren Legarda despite the black propaganda against her.

"Throughout this campaign, Loren Legarda has enjoyed the overwhelming support of voters, which is in keeping with her long-standing status as a member of the Senate and a public official. She has a long and credible record of advocacies, which is the foundation for her public support," the President said in a statement released by the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson.

"I am confident that she (Legarda) is not only prepared, but will do her utmost best, to answer any and all allegations raised against her," he noted.

President Aquino said the Team PNoy’s composition is based on "a shared commitment to honesty, transparency, and accountability in public service."

"Loren Legarda has never backed away from the duty of every person who works for the people, to live up to our common obligation to stand by these three basic principles of governance. I know that our fellow citizens will recognize this and that they can separate the facts from mere rumors or opinions," he stressed.

A businessman has questioned a condominium unit in New York worth US$ 700,000 that, he claims, is owned by Legarda, who bought it in 2006 but which she allegedly did not declare in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net (SALN) Worth from 2006 to 2010.

Louis Biraogo, who describes himself as a public-interest advocate, said Legarda could be impeached like Chief Justice Renato Corona if she fails to withdraw from the May 13 elections.

Legarda earlier dismissed Biraogo’s claim as "black propaganda" and said she disclosed the New York property in her SALN starting in 2007. (PNA)
