MANILA, May 2 — New People's Army rebels abducted a mayoralty candidate in Barangay Campawan, Bagangan town, Davao Oriental Wednesday afternoon.

Sr. Supt. Jose Carumba, Davao Oriental police chief, identified the victim as Ronie Osnan, 50, an independent candidate running for Bagangan mayoralty post.

The latter had just finished a speaking engagement at the locality when two men approached Osnan and asked the latter if they could speak to him in private around 1 p.m.

Unknown to his escorts, the two men are members of the NPA and were accosting Osnan for his failure to comply with their "permit-to-campaign" policy.

Witnesses said around 30 rebels were present when Osnan was snatched together with friend, Pastor Manny Tizon.

The latter was freed after three hours.

Carumba added Osnan managed to make a phone call to his family around 6 a.m. to tell them that he is safe with the rebels.

Negotiations are now ongoing for Osnan's release. (PNA)
