CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, April 29 -– Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City, on Monday lobbied for the establishment of a duty free and tax-free goods at the soon to be opened airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.
Rodriguez, in a Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting with the Regional Development Council-10, submitted Resolution No. 16 (s. 2013), requesting the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for the sale of duty free and tax-free goods at the Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental.
The resolution was in anticipation that Northern Mindanao would become a leading ecotourism destination in Mindanao with Cagayan de Oro City in the forefront of this ecotourism boom with the opening of the Laguindingan airport, Rodriguez said.
He said that the need to have a “duty free shop” was to cater the needs of returning overseas foreign workers (OFW) and foreign tourists and visitors.
Rodriguez said that the duty free shop would improve the services offered by the airport, generate foreign exchange, and revenue for the government.
President Benigno Aquino, III, announced that the newly constructed Laguindingan Airport would be opened for commercial flight on June 15, 2013.
Aquino ordered the deferment of the opening of the airport on April 30, 2013 in response to clamor of the business community and stakeholders to move the opening of the airport to later date pending installation of the airport’s navigation instruments to ensure the safety of air travelers. (PNA)
