Rep. De Venecia belies secret alliance with opponent

DAGUPAN CITY, April 29 — Rep. Gina de Venecia (Pangasinan, fourth district) Monday denied she has a secret alliance with her opponent who, with only 15 days to go before the election, has yet to put up a single campaign poster out in the street.

"There was no such deal and there will never be," said De Venecia, who is being challenged anew by Celia Lim, wife of Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim and who she roundly beat in the 2010 polls in the fourth congressional district.

De Venecia hinted the supposed deal between her and Celia Lim is another kind of deception being spread around by the Lim camp to draw a wedge between her and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, the Liberal Party candidate for mayor of Dagupan and who they are backing to the hilt in this election.

"I am sure this was a scheme again hatched up by the Lim camp in another bid to deceive the people of Dagupan by making it appear the De Venecias already let go off Fernandez so their own supporters will shift their support to Lim."

De Venecia made this clear during a joint press conference she had with Fernandez and senatorial candidate Grace Poe at the De Venecia residence in Barangay Bonuan Binloc.

The press conference was also attended by former Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. who just came back from a speaking engagement in Vietnam.

"Since the beginning, we are for Belen and who we believe has all the qualifications to be the next mayor of Dagupan and is our most reliable political ally in Dagupan," De Venecia said.

She said Belen Fernandez enjoys the support of President Benigno Aquino III who reports said, is returning to Dagupan in May to campaign for Belen and his other candidates.

She repeated what President Aquino said on March 8 that Dagupan City will be on a roll if Fernandez gets elected as city mayor.

Former Speaker De Venecia, responding to the question if his wife has a secret alliance with her opponent, said how will she ever agree to any alliance with her opponent when a survey they had commissioned showed it is now 94 percent to six percent in favor of his wife.

In the last election, he said, Mrs. de Venecia won over Celia Lim by a ratio of 75 percent to 25 percent.

As to the mayoralty race in Dagupan, Fernandez is currently leading over the incumbent Dagupan City by a wide margin because the people are now fed up with the Lim family with practically all of them now running for public office.

The De Venecias believe Fernandez will win the election for mayor of Dagupan City because the people of the city have long been clamoring for change.

On the other hand, Fernandez acknowledged the support of the De Venecias in her campaign to wrest control of city hall from Lim.

De Venecia is the leader of the Gina-Belen-Michael Team now currently barnstorming Dagupan whose rallies nightly can be called certified crowd drawers.

"Even if we are not holding any bingo bonanzas like what our opponents are doing in their rallies, people still go to our rallies only to see the Gina-Belen-Michael Team," Fernandez said. (PNA)
