MANILA, April 26 — Malacanang condemned the latest acts of violence in Lanao del Norte that killed 13 persons.
"We strongly condemn this act of violence on the mayor and his supporters," said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte in a press briefing on Friday.
First reports said 12 people were killed in the ambush late Thursday against Nunungan, Lanao del Norte Mayor Abdulmalik Manarampan and his supporters.
But 1st Infantry Division chief Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero said the death toll had climbed to 13 and 10 wounded.
The daughter of the mayor was also among the 13 people killed in the ambush.
"At this point, our security forces have deployed additional people in that particular area to prevent any possible escalation of violence," said Valte.
"We (also) want to make sure that there will be no further attacks on any candidates," she stressed.
At the same time, Valte appealed to the supporters of the different candidates "to keep calm, to continue to just campaign for their respective candidates, and not to engage in any violent behavior that will tend to discredit their particular candidates."
"So kalma lang po tayo; mainit na nga ho ‘yung panahon, hindi na po kailangang makisali po tayo (We appeal to just stay calm, we are already experiencing hot weather condition, we don't need to be such)," she said.
"Let us just do the best that we can for your particular candidates, at hindi po kasama doon ‘yung pakikipag-away doon sa mga supporters ng mga kalaban ninyong kandidato (and that does not include to fight with the supporters of the opposing candidate)," she added. (PNA)
