Hontiveros dares Nancy Binay anew to one-on-one debate

MANILA, April 25 – With opposition candidate Nancy Binay continuing her rise in the standing in recent surveys, Team PNoy senatorial candidate Risa Hontiveros has only one fond wish.

That the daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay would finally find time to engage in a debate with her.

”That’s my ardent wish,” Hontiveros exclaimed when asked during the press conference at the Team PNoy headquarters in Makati City if Nancy Binay has accepted the popular demand for them to go on a one-on-one debate.

Hontiveros said the debate will allow the public to closely scrutinize their programs and platform once elected to the Senate.

”I hope she has now enough time (for a debate) now that she is statistically safe in the survey,” Hontiveros said.

Meanwhile, Hontiveros urged the netizens to go easy on Binay, who claimed she’s a victim of cyber bullying. She also called on social bloggers not to include children in the issue.

Hontiveros, however, pointed out that Binay can never be a victim of cyber bulling, noting that she is a daughter of the vice president and can afford to pay for her television and print ads.

”I believe that she can debate. In fact, joining debate is the best answer to those criticisms,” Hontiveros, who has a proven track record in her stint as party-list representative, said.

Binay, who has held no elective post and worked mostly as the personal assistant of her parents, however declined, saying they could do that on the Senate floor should both of them make it in the coming midterm polls.

Binay’s refusal to accept the Hontiveros’ debate dare drew flak from social media, with comments ranging from “I told you so” and “What do you expect’ to the more straightforward “It just confirms she knows nothing.’

Twitter trackbacks criticized the vice president’s daughter for choosing to campaign than accept the debate, with some netizens pointing out “It’s not a good way to start a career.”

Another blogger even challenged the eldest daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay to “show us what you’ve got. If you have the guts, accept Risa’s challenge.” (PNA)
