Pimentel wants probe on well-orchestrated effort against him in Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO City, April 23 –Team PNoy senatorial candidate Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III has said his team will investigate an alleged well-orchestrated effort to put his reelection bid in peril in his own turf in Mindanao.

Pimentel said a regional survey showed that he suffered double-digit losses in voters’ preferences in four regions in Mindanao composed of 20 provinces including his bailiwick Misamis Oriental.

”I am having this investigated (what is happening) because I can’t remember any blunder that I have committed here,” Pimentel said in an interview with national media after attending the local proclamation rally here Monday night.

”The only explanation here from the political point of view, there must be sustained and well organized negative campaign conducted here in Mindanao, maybe. So we are investigating this,” he added.

Pimentel, a lawmaker from Cagayan de Oro City, said he sustained heavy losses in voters’ preferences in the Regions 10 and 11 as well as CARAGA and Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

”There was an issue here in Region 10 questioning my being a Mindanaoan. I said you cannot change history. I was born here in Cagayan de Oro. You cannot change that,” Pimentel, son of former Senator Aquino ‘Nene’ Pimentel Jr., explained.

Asked if he has any suspect in mind, Pimentel said they are still investigating “but definitely, not from my fellow candidates” with the Team PNoy.

When asked again if his 2007 senatorial election nemesis Juan Miguel Zubiri is among the suspects, Pimentel said the well orchestrated effort to back bite came from a radio station in Bukidnon, home province of Zubiri.

”We will still investigate this but if that is what really happened, then he (Zubiri) is the most logical suspect. But I still have no feedback as of this time,” Pimentel said.

Zubiri is running again for senator under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) after he resigned as senator in August 2011 amid poll fraud reports that allegedly helped Zubiri win the final 12th senatorial seat in 2007 polls.

Pimentel was eventually proclaimed the 12th winning senator in the controversial 2007 polls on August 11, 2011 after the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) ruled in favor of Pimentel’s poll protest.

During the campaign rally here Monday night, Pimentel appealed to his fellow Mindanaoans to give him full six-year term in the Senate.

In the recent Social Weather Station (SWS) survey, Pimentel maintained his position in the so-called Magic 12 although he skidded from sixth to seventh place and suffered for four minus points.

Pimentel said he cannot explain the one rank skid “maybe the margin of error.”

The latest SWS survey showed nine from Team PNoy – Loren Legarda, Alan Peter Cayetano, Cynthia Villar, Francis Escudero, Bam Aquino, Aquilino Pimentel III, Sonny Angara, Grace Poe and Antonio Trillanes IV, and 3 UNA — Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito and Jack Enrile occupying the top 12. (PNA)
