Comelec summons 5 senatorial candidates and 5 party-list groups for campaign poster violation

MANILA, April 18 — Five senatorial candidates and five party-list organization running in the May 13, 2013 midterm polls were summoned by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Law Department in connection with violations to Sec. 9 of Republic Act 9006 (Fair Elections Act) as implemented by Comelec Resolution 9615.

In a statement, the poll body has directed Gregorio Honasan, Eduardo Villanueva, Benigno ‘Bam’ Aquino, Richard Gordon and Cynthia Villar to appear before the preliminary investigation.

The schedules are as follows: Honasan (April 26, 2013; 2:00PM), Villanueva (April 25, 2013; 2:00PM), Aquino (April 25, 2013; 10:00AM and April 29, 2013; 2:00PM), Gordon (April 30, 2013; 10:00AM), and Villar (April 30, 2013; 10:00AM).

Likewise, the poll body issued subpoenas to the following Partylist groups for poster violations: LPG Marketers Association, Akbayan, BRO PGBI, Sanlakas and Bagong Henerasyon.

The groups are asked to attend their scheduled hearings: LPAG Marketers Association on April 29,2013; 10:00AM, Akbayan (April 29, 2013; 10:00AM), BRO PGBI (April 29, 2013; 2:00PM), Sanlakas (April 30, 2013; 2:00PM) and Bagong Henerasyon (April 30, 2013; 2:00PM)

According to Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez these hearings prove the poll body’s determination to impartially enforce campaign rules in connection with the upcoming elections.

Under Comelec Resolution 9615, parties and candidates may post any lawful campaign material only in authorized common poster areas in public places and in private places provided it has the consent of the owner. (PNA)
