MANILA, April 11 – Senatorial candidates Edgardo Angara and Grace Poe have been named two of the six senatorial candidates partially announced by the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats it would support in the May 13 midterm elections.
According to Lakas-CMD president and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, the political party of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will be actually endorsing 10 senatorial candidates.
Based on the initial list, the Lakas-CMD will also support Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay, San Juan City Rep. JV Ejercito, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile and re-electionist Sen. Gregorio Honasan II from the United Nationalist Alliance.
“We see them as allies for extending help to our colleagues whose districts have been flooded by typhoons and seriously affected by other natural disasters,” Romualdez said in a media interview after the party’s National Executive Committee meeting at the Manila Golf and Country Club in Makati City.
“They will champion people’s interests and obviously we share principled ideas, policies and goals to help the country propel its economic growth,” Romualdez added.
Lakas-CMD chairman Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. attended the executive meeting along with House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez and Maguindanao Rep. Simeon Datumanong, both vice chairmen.
Romualdez said they choose the four remaining candidates they would support next week to complete the 10 slots and will leave the remaining two at the discretion of their members.
“By next week, we will make another announcement to complete the ten names and will leave the two slots as agreed upon earlier at the discretion of our members. Some of our local candidates have expressed sympathy and support to some senatorial candidates of their choice and we are respecting this request,” the House deputy minority leader explained.
Romualdez said if ever re-electionist Sen. Loren Legarda would not be included in the final list, “I will still support her using the two seats left at the discretion of every member.”
He said the Lakas-CMD leadership has decided to revitalize the party to ensure the election of their local officials. (PNA)
