MANILA, March 29 — A militiaman assigned to the 4th Infantry Division was killed while trying to prevent rebels — affiliated with the Guerilla Front 21C of the North Eastern Mindanao Committee — from harassing devotees of the "Station of the Cross" in Barangay Anticala, Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte early Friday morning.

Lt. Col. Eugenio Julio Osias IV, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said thousands of devotees where attending the religious event when NPA fighters came out of nowhere and harassed the proceedings.

He added that the militiaman tried to prevent the rebels from disturbing the religious rites but was killed.

Osias declined to identify the slain militiaman pending notification of the latter's family.

“These NPAs disrespected the solemnity of the Station of the Cross. They don’t know when to stop fighting,” said Rev. Father Joesilo Amalla, parish priest of St. Joseph Cathedral in Butuan City who presided the activity. (PNA)
