Army kills two suspected brigands in Zamboanga Del Sur encounter

MANILA, March 29 — Troopers from the Army's 44th Infantry Battalion shot and killed two suspected brigands during an encounter in Sitio Gunsili, Barangay Danganan, Lapuyan town, Zamboanga Del Sur Thursday afternoon.

Major Edgardo Amores, 1st Infantry Division spokesperson, said the incident took place around 5:40 p.m. as the 44th Infantry Battalion, a field unit of the former, was responding to reports that lawless elements were in the vicinity.

At this point, government forces encountered a group reportedly headed by Amih Andi, triggering a 30-minute firefight.

The brigands quickly withdrew after Andi and another suspect were killed by government fire, witnesses claimed.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing.

Andi is one of the most wanted persons in Zamboanga Del Sur. He is involved in the massacre of six civilians in Barangay Tininghalang, Lapuyan which took place last Feb. 23, 2012.

Also wounded in the same incident where eight civilians. (PNA)
