3 encounters mar Holy Week commemoration in E. Visayas

MANILA, March 29 — The 8th Infantry Division based in Camp Lukban, Catbalogan City, Samar, announced three engagements with the New People's Army (NPA) occurred in the region as the nation commemorates Holy Week.

Belated reports from Capt. Gene Orense, the unit's spokesperson, said the clashes happened last Holy Monday and Tuesday.

The first firefight took place last March 25 in Barangay Liberty, Ormoc City, Leyte where troopers of the 19th Infantry Battalion were conducting routine security patrols around 3 p.m.

A short firefight ensued and ended with the rebels fleeing with an undetermined number believed wounded.

No losses were reported in the government side.

The second encounter, also March 25 afternoon, took place in Barangay Sto. Nino, Paranas, Samar when members of the 87th Infantry Battalion encountered five rebels.

A rebel was slain in the issuing firefight. Recovered from the scene were .38 caliber revolver, one hammock and NPA subversive documents.

The third incident occurred in Barangay Ga-as, Ormoc City, Leyte, where elements of the 19th Infantry Battalion were conducting routine security patrols around 1 p.m. of March 26.

The NPA guerillas quickly escaped after seeing the superior military force.

“The Philippine Army assures the public that we will sustain our security operations in the region so that the catholic populace can observe a peaceful celebration of the Holy Week,” 8th Infantry Division Major Gen. Gerardo T. Layug said. (PNA)
