MANILA, March 28 — The number of violators of the current election gun ban has almost breached to 2,000 mark, figures from the Philippine National Police's tally indicated.

According to Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr., PNP spokesman, that the police operations in compliance to Comelec Resolution 9561-A and Republic Act 8292, have resulted in the arrest of 1,980 persons, mostly civilians, since the rule was imposed early this year.

As of Thursday, Cerbo said that from 1,980 number of persons arrested, 1,815 of them civilians, 26 government officials, 99 security guards, 23 were from the PNP, 13 from the Armed Forces, one each from the Bureau of Fire Protection and Bureau of Jail Management and Penelogy, and two from the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit.

The PNP also said it has confiscated 1,944 firearms, 102 airguns and firearm replicas, 577 bladed weapons, 105 grenades, 299 other explosives, and 17,044 rounds of ammunition.

The Commission on Elections gun ban, which seeks to minimize poll-related violence, started last Jan. 13 and lasts until June 12.

While it is in effect, permits to carry firearms outside residences are usually suspended, with only law enforcers in uniform and on duty allowed to carry firearms.

PNP Chief Director General Alan Purisima said the police will remain active in enforcement and security operations while reiterating his instructions to PNP units to intensify checkpoint and gun check operations to ensure Secure and Fair Elections (SAFE 2013).

Purisima is the vice chairman of the National Task Force SAFE, which is in charge of the security preparations for the 2013 polls.

Meanwhile, in a recent police operation, Cerbo said 32-year-old farmer Richard Balbalra was arrested in Camarines Norte last Tuesday after he allegedly pointed a gun at a 65-year-old man without apparent reason.

Cerbo said Balbalra was caught with a caliber .38 revolver loaded with six live ammunition during his arrest.

He is now detained at Labo municipal police station for proper disposition, Cerbo said. (PNA)
