UNA declares political truce during Holy Week

MANILA, March 25 — The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) on Monday declared truce and appealed to its detractors to stop personal attacks and instead join them in prayer in observance of the Season of Lent.

UNA Secretary General and campaign manager Toby Tiangco said UNA will not make any reprisal even if attacked in media.

Tiangco said he will not reply this time to Sen. Koko Pimentel's posts on twitter that UNA is grandstanding on the issue of the eight to 12-hour island-wide blackouts in Mindanao.

"Although we are raising legitimate political issues, we will refrain from responding to the twits of the good senator. We pray that he finds time to reflect and banish the anger in his heart," Tiangco said.

UNA said in its Lenten message: "Instead of using up the remaining days of the week to campaign, with sincere intentions, we adjusted our schedules for everyone in UNA to have a moment of reflection this Holy Week."

The Coalition is asking every Filipino to unite in prayer in the midst of problems besetting the country.

"In observance of Lent, it is but fitting to place in our hearts and minds the pains of our fellow Filipinos who are suffering in hunger, poverty, and injustice. Let us bind ourselves in prayer so that we may show our unity and goals to advance the welfare of the entire nation."

UNA senatorial candidate Nancy Binay said the candidates have agreed not to reply to all kinds of criticisms coming from their political detractors.

"That will be our sacrifice during the Holy Week,” she said.

Senatorial bet Mitos Magsaysay said that UNA would not engage in any politicking in this time of prayer, noting that “UNA knows the proper decorum of campaigning."

"Forgiveness is the message of Holy Week—and it is also our prayer that our detractors banish the anger in their hearts in observance of the passion of Jesus Christ," UNA said in its message.

Tiangco added that the Lenten season is built on the Christian virtue of forgiveness but stressed that those who find it hard to forgive must seek God first in their hearts. (PNA)
