UPDATE: 9 die, 17 hurt in Maguindanao highway mishap

PARANG, Maguindanao, Mar. 17 — Two more passengers of an ill-fated passenger van died after it collided with a hauler truck in Maguindanao, raising the death toll to nine, authorities here said.
Mayor Ibrahim Ibay of Parang town where the accident happened at 11:45 a.m. Sunday said two more passengers died at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center at about 5 p.m.
Ibay said four of the fatalities died on the spot after they were pinned to death when the van, traveling from Gen. Santos City to Pagadian City collided with a sand and gravel hauler truck in Sitio Timbangan, Barangay Sarmiento, Parang, Maguindanao.
Elements of the 37th Infantry Battalion who were the first to respond to the accident, said police traffic investigators reported that the van driver of the overloaded passenger vehicle lost control of the van after one of its tires burst and collided with the truck.
The dump truck was heading toward nearby Barangay Simuay in Sultan Kudarat town, also in Maguindanao, to fetch sand when the accident happened.
The wounded victims, many in critical condition, were rushed to the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center.
Parang traffic investigators said the van with 19 passengers, including the driver, was owned by a certain Ireneo Tanghal while the truck was operated by Mamilan Mangutara of Barangay Simuay.
It was the worst highway mishap in Maguindanao involving passenger vehicles in the past two years, police said.
In 2011, a truck cum passenger vehicle from upland town of Upi, also in Maguindanao, fell into a ravine while negotiating a sharp curve killing seven persons. (PNA)
