Prelates to hold masses for Pope Benedict XVI

MANILA, Feb. 24 — Catholic prelates will be offering masses for Pope Benedict XVI in their respective archdiocese and dioceses days before the pontiff’s scheduled resignation on February 28.

Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco said that aside from the scheduled mass on February 26 at 6 pm at the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, special prayers will also be offered to Pope Benedict during masses before February 28.

“We have a mass for Pope Benedict XVI on Feb. 26 at 6 pm and special prayers for him during masses before Feb. 28,” he added.

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said that on February 25, they will be holding a concelebrated mass for Holy Mother Church and for the resigning pope at 9 am at the cathedral.

“After that, the priests will continue our prayer for the conclave and God’s guidance for the next pope,” he said.

Archdiocesan and parish council leaders as well as all religious congregations, associations and school representatives are expected to attend.

A special mass will also be held for the pope on February 26 at 5:30 pm, according to Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes.

“We will celebrate a special mass for Pope Benedict on Feb 26 at the cathedral at 5:30 pm,” he said.

Marbel Bishop Dimualdo Gutierrez said prayers in all masses and the things that will follow after pope’s resignation.

“We will say prayers for him in all masses and the pope’s resignation, sede vacante and conclave will be mentioned,” he added.

Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros said a mass will also be held at their cathedral for the pope on March 1.

“We will have a mass for him on March 1, first Friday at 6 pm at our cathedral,” the prelate said.

Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said they will pray for the pope. “We only pray for him as usual.” (PNA)
