MANILA, Feb 19 — The employees union of the Commission on Elections has asked President Benigno S. Aquino III to appoint a commissioner that comes from the ranks.

The Comelec Employees Union has recommended Alexander Pilotin, the poll body’s election attorney for Region II.

“Mr. President, the Comelec EU is of firm belief that Atty. Pilotin’s appointment as Comelec commissioner will be a big boost to the Commission, most especially to the rank and file employees,” the union's letter to the President read.

Mark Ramirez, the union's national president said poll workers' salaries are low compared to other government agencies.

He said if Pilotin gets appointed, the lawyer would bring these concerns of rank and file employees to the Commission.

Pilotin, who was presented to the media by the union, signified his intent to be appointed as poll commissioner and submitted his letter to Aquino.

Pilotin rose from the ranks. He was a clerk of court of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya Regional Trial Court Branch 29 from 1995 to 1998 and served as provincial election supervisor of Ifugao from 1999 to 2004.

The President has yet to appoint the replacements of former Election commissioners Rene Sarmiento and Armando Velasco who retired early this month. (PNA)
