MANILA, Feb. 19 — Troops from the 20th Infantry Battalion, a sub-unit of the 8th Infantry Division, have foiled a landmine attack by the New People's Army in Barangay Happy Valley, San Isidro town, Northern Samar Monday.

Capt. Gene Orense, 8th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the two landmines and other improvised explosive devices were recovered during routine security operations there.

“The recovery of landmines is a clear and direct manifestation of the NPAs' wanton disregard of human life and that the rebels continuously violate Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law,” he said.

“The use of landmines is also a blatant violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law and is banned internationally since landmines cause unmitigated damages to life and property,” Orense stressed. (PNA)
