QUEZON CITY, Feb. 11 — The warden of Quezon District Jail based in Lucena City has been recommended for relief from his post by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

This followed the controversy over the alleged suicide of Dennis Aranas, a lookout in the Gerry Ortega murder case.

According to BJMP-Region IV director Chief Supt. Serrafin Barretto, he already submitted the request to the Commission on Elections to relieve Supt. Annie Espinosa pending investigation conducted by the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation.

“Hinihintay lang namin approval ng Comelec bago naming ipinatupad,” Barretto said in a text message.

The BJMP official recommended Supt. Teofilo Labating as Espinosa’s replacement.

Espinosa’s recommended relief came after relatives of Aranas expressed disbelief over the supposed suicide angle floated by the BJMP.

Quoting a spot report, Barretto earlier said that Aranas was found dead with a strap of bag tied around his neck while other inmates were lining up their food ration.

Two days before the alleged suicide, Aranas reportedly confided to another inmate that he had a quarrel with his live-in partner.

However, his relatives claimed they noticed bruises in the victim’s hands and other parts of the body prompting them to dismiss the suicide angle.

The Public Attorney’s Office also expressed doubts on the BJMP’s theory.(PNA)
