MANILA, Feb. 4 — The Senate Monday approved on third and final reading a bill declaring the waling-waling as a national flower, aside from sampaguita.

Voting 19-0, the Senate approved House Bill 5655 sponsored by Senate committee on education, arts and culture chairman Senator Edgardo Angara. Representatives Garcia-Albano, Palmones and Primicias-Agabas in the House.

Angara said that unlike the sampaguita, the waling-waling is native to the Philippines and endemic to Davao, Cotabato and Zamboanga.

“Orchid lovers all over the world consider the waling-waling as one of the most unique and beautiful native orchids in the world and that while some adore it, most Filipinos have forgotten its natural beauty,” Angara added.

Sen. Loren Legarda, who co-sponsored the measure, said “the approval of the measure will place the waling-waling under protection.”

”It will mandate the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources to promulgate rules and regulations that will protect, conserve, and propagate the waling-waling orchid together with sampaguita,” Legarda said.

The Waling-waling comes from the orchid family and is known as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids."

Sampaguita was declared the national flower of the Philippines under Proclamation No. 652 on Feb 1, 1934 by Governor-General Frank Murphy.(PNA)

I’m glad this was passed! I really like that we have waling-waling & sampaguita as our national flowers. Hope it can help in boosting our economy by exporting these to other countries. Good job Senators Loren Legarda and Ed Angara.

Made a little research on this flower and I approve of it being a national flower. Never seen an actual waling waling and I wanna see a real one immediately 🙂 Thank you senator Loren and Ed Angara for your efforts here.

Yung mga treasure nating ganito worth lang na ipreserve nilang mabuti kasi isa ito sa mga pwede nating ipagmalaki sa ibang bansa.
