MANILA Dec. 30 — Every year before the celebration of New Year’s eve, Filipinos celebrate Rizal day every Dec. 30 to commemorate the death of the country's national hero.

Annually, Rizal Day celebration, which the President leads, starts at 7:00 a.m.-7:03 a.m. with the flag raising ceremony that is timed to his death.

There is also a wreath laying ceremony done by the President of the Philippines and other public officials at the Rizal Monument in Rizal Park.

Today, Rizal day was celebrated by President Benigno Aquino III, government officials and family members of Rizal.

“Lahat tayo magpakabayani, hindi na kailangan mamatay para maging bayani malilit na bagay pwede natin gawin mahalin natin ang bayan, mahalin natin ang mga anak natin, [mahalin natin ang] mga kamag-anak natin, sumunod [tayo] sa mga batas trapiko [kung], lahat tayo [kailangan] gagawa ng ganun,” said Victor Reyes, grandchild of Saturnina, the eldest sister of Jose Rizal.

According to Mayor Alfredo Lim, the essence of Rizal day is for Filipinos not to forget the sufferings of our heroes.

According to Lim,the youth tends to forget the sacrifices made by all national heroes and should be constantly reminded to them.

“[Ang] mga nanunungkulan sa pamahalaan sila ang dapat manguna, para sila ang pamarisan ng pamayanan at higit sa lahat ang kabataan di ba sinabi ni Dr. Jose Rizal ang pag-asa ng bayan ay nasa kabataan ,” he also said.

“Paano magiging pag-asa kung di nila nalalaman ang ating kasaysayan meron tayong kasabihan ang hindi marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan hindi makakarating sa paroroonan,” he concluded. (PNA)
