MANILA, Dec. 30 — The Commission on Elections (Comelec)is scheduled to conduct mock polls in some areas of the country next month in a bid to identify problems which may arise in the 2013 elections.

“We want to see the possible flaws so that we can avoid it in the holding of the regular polls. That’s the purpose of this to see the shortcomings, flaws that will have to be addressed so that there won’t be a repeat of it in the regular elections,” Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said in an interview.

Sarmiento noted the conduct of the said polls is prescribed under Republic Act No. 9369.

“It’s there in RA 9369 that there should be mock polls, field testing before the day of the elections,” he said.Sarmiento said the conduct of mock polls is also to test the signal in the area for the transmission of the results on election day. But, the poll official did not name the areas where the mocks polls will be conducted as the en banc is still discussing it.

“There are suggested areas in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and in the National Capital Region (NCR) but it’s not yet final,” Sarmiento said.

The poll body used some of the names of national heroes, celebrities and popular bands in the training ballots during the mock polls held before the May 2010 presidential and local polls.(PNA)
