Negros solon hopes passage of Sugarcane Bill before Congress adjourns

BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 24 — Third District Rep. Alfredo Benitez expressed his optimism that the 15th Congress will pass the Sugarcane Bill before it adjourns this December.

"As long as the Congress is still in session, there is always a chance that the Sugarcane Bill will be passed," Benitez said.

The bill is still pending in the House Committee on Appropriations.

Benitez said one factor that slowed down the bill process was the financial concerns raised by the Department of Finance (DOF).

The Sugarcane Bill aimed to address concerns raised by the sugar industry leaders relative to the lowering of tariff on imported sugar by the year 2015.

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero is the bill’s counterpart in the House of Senate.(PNA)
