ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec. 18 — A total of 47 personnel from six municipalities of Zamboanga del Sur have undergone a three-day Basic/Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS) held by the Office of the Civil Defense-9 (OCD-9).

OCD Regional Director Adriano Fuego said the training was designed to equip local government units (LGUs) to heighten its vigilance in ensuring that disaster risks are prevented or lessened.

Fuego said the training is also aimed to prepare LGUs to address and respond to the needs of the affected population when disasters or emergencies arise.

Fuego said that the 47 participants who attended the three-day ICS training were from the municipalities of Molave, Ramon Magsaysay, Tambulig, Tukuran, Josefina, and Dumingag, all located in the first district of Zamboanga del Sur.

ICS is a standardized on-scene emergency management concept specifically designed to allow its users to adopt an integrated organization structure, equal to the complexity and demands of a single or multiple incidents.

Fuego said the conduct of the training, which was held from December 10-12 in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur, is important especially that Mindanao is now always visited by typhoons.

Fuego noted that this year is the second time that Mindanao was visited by a strong typhoon and the first time in history that Region 9 was placed under signal No. 3 brought by typhoon "Pablo."

The first strong typhoon to hit Mindanao was typhoon Sendong that hit the city of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro last year.

“It only shows that there is a need for us to prepare and ICS is the answer on how to effectively respond when there is a disaster,” Fuego added.(PNA)
