Ilonggos commemorate 156th birth anniversary of Graciano Lopez Jaena

ILOILO CITY, Dec. 18 — Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog on Tuesday urged Ilonggos to unite, a lesson learned from Ilonggo hero Graciano Lopez Jaena, and to use their intelligence to promote Iloilo.

December 18 marked the 156th birth anniversary of Lopez Jaena, an orator and propagandist, who spent most of his time with Dr. Jose Rizal during the Spanish period.

The mayor added that Lopez Jaena is but a manifestation that Ilonggos have the intellect and ability to write.

The celebration kicked off with a wreath-laying and floral offering ceremony at the monument of the local hero at the Jaro plaza led by Mabilog.

It was followed by a video presentation of the life and works of the local hero by Iloilo board member and historian Demy Sonza.

It was capped by the awarding of prizes to winners of the “Binalaybay” contest.

The “Binalaybay” contest that talked about the life and works of Lopez Jaena and delivered in Hiligaynon dialect was won by Mia Keen P. Keano of the West Visayas State University Integrated Laboratory School. (PNA)
