DAVAO CITY, Dec. 18 — The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office planned to be more aggressive in positioning Davao Region as a tourism destination in 2013, DOT regional director Art Boncato said.

Boncato issued the statement even as he believed that 2013 will be a very challenging year since efforts will be focused on rebuilding tourism destinations destroyed by typhoon Pablo particularly Davao Oriental.

"The situation will not, however, hinder both the private and government sectors in advancing its tourism strategies, among others, the branding marketing system to boost the industry," he said.

Branding Davao Region as “From Island to Highlands” will be enhanced by establishing various visitor-catching events and experiences that were expected to generate popularity, he said.

Boncato said the tourism sector will focus on the South Korean market given the volume of visitors particularly in Davao City.

Boncato said Koreans are currently emerging as one of the top investors in the country including Davao City.

"Though there are special efforts to capture the Korean market, works are continued to further increase the Japanese market, which ranked number three in the number of tourist arrivals in Davao in latest DOT records," he said.

He expressed hope that direct flights from Korea to Davao will be established.(PNA)
