MANILA, Dec. 14 — Over a thousand street sweepers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) received "noche buena" package from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporations (PAGCOR) as part of the “Bayanihan: Pamaskong Handog ng PAGCOR 2012” on Friday.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino thanked the PAGCOR for facilitating the distribution of the packages.

He said the event served as fitting Christmas treat for the sweepers whom he described as “heroes of the streets”.

“It is but proper that we give them a real celebration this Yuletide season in recognition of the effort that they exert every day to maintain the cleanliness of our streets," Tolentino said.

"We are very thankful that PAGCOR, under the leadership of Chairman Cristiano Naguiat Jr., helped us to carry out this memorable and fun-filled event for our metro aides,” he added.

PAGCOR allocated more than P800,000 for the MMDA gift giving party. Prior to this PAGCOR also gave grand Christmas celebration to 1,995 street sweepers from the cities of Pasay, Paranaque and Manila last Dec. 12 which was graced by President Aquino III.

For his part, Naguiat said the Christmas parties that the state-owned gaming firm tended for the street sweepers was the agency’s way of expressing its gratitude to this hard working sector.

Anchored on the "bayanihan theme" Naguiat said all PAGCOR employees actively took part in the Pamaskong handog activities that were conducted nationwide.

The “Bayanihan” Pamaskong Handog 2012 ng PAGCOR began on November 29, 2012 and will end on December 20, 2012. More or less 8,600 less fortunate Filipinos under the care of 41 government and charitable institutions all over the country have been chosen as beneficiaries and the agency allocated a total of P26.7 million for its project.(PNA)
