DA eyes P30-B projects for Mindanao by 2013

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 11 — The Department of Agriculture (DA) will allot about P30 billion of itsbudget next year for projects in Mindanao.

DA Assistant Secretary Davinio Catbagan in an interview at the recently held 14th Davao Trade Expo here, said upon orders of President Benigno Aquino III, DA will capitalize on the agricultural and livestock potentials of Mindanao through construction of farm infrastructure projects, including irrigation, farm-to-market roads, ports, hatcheries, breeding facilities for aquaculture and post-harvest storage facilities.

He said DA will maximize the funds for the conservation, improvement and preservation of grazing lands; control and prevention of livestock diseases; research and development of alternative feed technologies and exploration of new export opportunities.

The establishment of cold storage facilities and a Triple A slaughter house is also set in place with a budget allocation of P70 million.

These facilities are targeted for the processing of meat products for the export market.

Catbagan confirmed the national government is currently negotiating with Qatar, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi in positioning Mindanao as a premier source of export quality pork products. (PNA)
