MANILA, Dec. 7 — President Benigno Aquino III has appointed University of the Philippines political science professor Miriam Coronel Ferrer as the new chairperson of the government peace negotiating panel in talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Ferrer replaced Dean Marvic Leonen who was appointed as Supreme Court Associate Justice last month.

"We are pleased to announce that President Aquino has appointed Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer as the new Chairman and chief negotiator of the GPH peace panel vice Dean and now Justice Marvic Leonen," said Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda in a text message.

Coronel-Ferrer was an adviser of the government peace panel's technical working group and a member of the GPH peace panel since 2010.

She is the first woman to become chairperson of the government peace panel negotiating with the MILF.

Coronel-Ferrer was the director of the UP Third World Studies Center from 2000 to 2003, and a former co-chairperson of the Non-State Actors Working Group of the International Campaign to Ban Land Mines from 1999 to 2004.

She was also a member of fact-finding missions organized by international non-government organizations investigating violence in Cambodia, East Timor and Nepal. (PNA)
