MANILA, Nov. 29 – The Philippine Army (PA) on Thursday announced that it is joining the whole nation in commemorating the 149th birth anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio this Friday.

Army spokesperson Major Harold M. Cabunoc said the PA recognizes the sacrifices of Bonifacio in the name of freedom, and the crucial role Filipino soldiers have played to free the country and liberate the people from foreign colonization.

“Today, the PA is tasked with an equally challenging job to preserve the country’s freedom and democracy. May the heroism of Gat Andres Bonifacio serve as inspiration as we carry out our mandate to protect the people and secure the land,” he stressed.

PA chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista and guest speaker Defense Undersecretary Honorio S Azcueta will lead the PA’s commemoration of Bonifacio’s heroic contribution as the Great Plebeian through a wreath laying ceremony at the monument of Andres Bonifacio at the headquarters of the Philippine Army in Fort Bonifacio Friday.

Bonifacio’s surviving grandchild, Nenita S Distrito, will witness the commemoration.

As fitting tribute to the greatness of Andres Bonifacio, the local government of Maragondon, Cavite unveiled in 2004 a four-meter Bonifacio monument in the hillside of Mt. Nagpatong.

The shrine, built at the execution site of Andres and his brother Procopio, serves as a testament of Bonifacio’s heroism and sacrifices when he led the first Philippine revolution.

In acknowledging Bonifacio's heroism, the PA also named its national headquarters as Fort Andres Bonifacio (formerly called Fort William McKinley). (PNA)
