MANILA, Nov. 26 — The Department of Education (DepEd) joined the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in the 10th Ceremonial Rice Harvest at Manila's Rizal Park Rice Garden in line with the launching on Monday of the National Year of Rice 2013 in the National Capital Region.

According to Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro, there are a lot of lessons that can be learned with this event.

“Lalong-lalo na yung pangaral na huwag magsasayang ng bigas o kanin sa ating hapag-kainan,” he stressed.

This is also on par with the K to 12 Program where the science curriculum teaches the science of everyday living.

The DepEd chief said science and mathematics must not just be based from books and must be used in everyday living.

He noted that the Ifugaos taught engineering formulas from the construction of the rice terraces, which goes to show that learning is not confined in the four corners of a classroom.

“Thirteen schools in Manila are going to make small science gardens that are tentatively called 'Palayan sa Paaralan' to show that even in Manila, though we have small schools, we could still show our students how to plant and take good care of our rice,” Luistro said.

The DepEd will make age-appropriate lessons for elementary and high school students about proper caring and planting of rice. (PNA)
