ILOILO CITY, Nov. 21 — The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) has ordered the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Maasin to stop their quarry operation due to numerous violations.

PENRO head Soledad Sucaldito said although the LGU has secured a quarry permit from the province, they failed to secure its gratuitous permit from their office as prerequisite to any government entity/ instrumentality for the extraction of certain minerals for government projects.

She added since the extraction of sand and gravel is within the distance of one-kilometer or under Barangay Caigon bridge of Tigum River, the municipality also violated the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 which stated that extraction or removal of materials shall not be allowed within the distance of one-kilometer from the boundaries of reservoirs established for public water supply, archeological and historical sites, or of any public or private works or structures, unless with prior clearance of the agency or owner concerned is obtained.

Sucaldito said even though the purpose of extraction is for government projects, it does not mean that LGU-Maasin will be exempted from the regulation.

“We will confiscate their equipment and arrest their personnel if they will not stop their operation," she said.

Apart from the arrest, Sucaldito said the municipality will be charged of administrative fine of P5,000 and DENR fee for quarrying without permit and no Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) at maximum of P 50,000.(PNA)
