COTABATO CITY, Nov. 21 — The Commission on Elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Comelec-ARMM) has purged 236,489 double registrants from its old regional voters’ list.

Of the total number, 33,778 of the questionable registrants were minors, the new Comelec–ARMM listing showed.

Lawyer Udtog Tago, Comelec Maguindanao provincial supervisor, said that following the eradication of double registrants, the number of voters in the region has been reduced to 1.33 million from its previous record of 1.57 million electorates in the region.

“If the applicant will be detected as double registrants, utmost punishment is he cannot vote,” Tago said.

The ARMM covers the cities of Marawi and Lamitan and the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao Del Sur, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Sulu.

The regional election office has conducted a July 18 to Nov. 10, 2012 registration through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to come up with the new voters’ list up.

Tago said officials from the Comelec headquarters in Manila had started reviewing the sanitized regional voters list on Tuesday prior to the posting of the new list to the different cities and municipalities across the region. (PNA)
