DAVAO CITY, Nov. 9 — A military official has clarified it was not the entire Army battalion that was pulled out but just its augmentation unit to Task Force Kitaco, named after the towns of Kiblawan (Davao del Sur), Tampakan (South Cotabato) and Columbio (Sultan Kudarat).

Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, spokesperson of the 10th Infantry Division, said only a unit of the 27th Infantry Battalion was replaced by the 39th IB, purposely to decrease the tension in the area following the Oct 18 incident that killed B’laan tribal leader Daguil Capion’s wife and two sons.

Paniza also said Capt. Joel Wayagwag also replaced Lt. Col. Alexis Bravo as the task force commander, who earlier quit his post as commander of the 27th IB.

“We are hoping that the tension there would slowly subside following the replacement of troops there,” he said.

Killed in the Oct. 18 incident were Capion's wife Juvy, 31, and their sons Pop, 13, and John, 8.

Thirteen members of the 27th Infantry Battalion were recommended by the 10th Infantry Division board of inquiry to face court martial proceedings over the incident.

The soldiers, led by 1st Lt. Dante Jimenez, were checking the reported presence of armed men in Barangay Kimlawis but were fired upon so they retaliated.

Jimenez admitted failing to assess who they were facing and found out later that they clashed with the group of Capion, whose family members were in the area, Paniza said.

The board of inquiry had requested the Army higher headquarters to convene a general court martial for Jimenez, Sgt. Dennis Murillo, Sgt. Rommel Ballenes, Cpl. Robert Godio, Cpl. Ayiha Namla, Cpl. Brucekhan Sahali, Cpl. Bashir Said, Cpl. Julah Majid, Cpl. Jemson Jadjuli, Pfc. Marlowe Gayamot, Pfc. Joel Lopez, Pfc. Darryl Tayamora, and Pfc. Richard Julian.

The soldiers will be tried for violations of Articles of War 76 (Misbehavior before the Enemy), 96 (Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and Gentleman), and 97 (Conduct Prejudicial to Good Order and Military Discipline).(PNA)
