CEBU CITY, Nov. 2 — The families of the victims who died in the accident involving Jegan's bus last Oct. 27 received P40,000 each as insurance benefits from the Passenger Insurance Management Inc. (Pami).

Pami branch manager Judy Tan said the remaining P35,000 will be released once the families submit death certificates with registry numbers, marriage contract if claimed by spouses, and their identification cards.

Seven persons were killed while 44 others were injured when a Jegan's bus crashed into a concrete wall in Toledo City in western Cebu Saturday night.

Investigators were still trying to determine whether the cause of the mishap was mechanical defect or human error.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)7 Director Ahmed Cuizon handed the insurance benefits to Purita Montes, sister of deceased Felidelfa Montes Baratbate of Pinamungahan, Cebu; and Nida Cañabano, wife of deceased Virgilio Cañabano Jr. of Lutopan in Toledo City.

The families of the other five fatalities namely Melinda Limbag, Thelma Sipalay, Irineo Umba, Jose Agrix Baraquil and Cherry Ann Nillama, also received P40,000 each.

Tan said those injured will receive P15,000 each for hospitalization expenses.

LTFRB 7 Director Raul Aguilos said they will continue the roadworthiness test on buses and other public utility vehicles at the roadside and no longer inside terminals to avoid travel delays. (PNA)
