Fire hits Pagadian City slum area

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov. 2 -– At least 25 houses were razed to the ground when a fire hit a slum area Friday in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province, a top police official said.

Zamboanga del Sur police director Supt. Kenneth Mission disclosed the fire broke out at 3:30 p.m. in Purok Fernan, Barangay San Jose.

Mission said initially the cause of the fire was faulty electrical wiring.

The fire broke out following an explosion in one of the affected houses when the electric service resumed after a three-hour power outage, Mission said.

He said the fire rapidly spread since the houses were closely built from each other aside from being made of light materials.

He said one of the houses burned down was owned by a provincial jail guard.

Strong winds and narrow roads leading to the fire scene were among the difficulties confronted by firemen in putting off the fire, he said. (PNA)
