BACOLOD CITY, Oct. 16 –Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr. on Tuesday said the province is slated to bid for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in April 2013.
Some 20,000 guests are expected to come and see action during the Palaro, said Maranon during the installation of Dr. Juliet Jeruta as new provincial school superintendent of Negros Occidental.
The province will be joining the bidding on Friday at the Bulwagan central office of the Department of Education (DepEd) even as the governor already expressed confidence that Negros Occidental will win over Negros Oriental.
Negros Occidental already played host to the 1998 and 2000 Palarong Pambansa.
Public Information Officer Karen Dinsay said that the hosting of the national sporting event will not only benefit the province but also Bacolod City by bringing an influx in the coming of tourists.
She added that it will be timely for the athletes, guests, and tourists to also witness the spectacular celebration of the 19-year-old Panaad sa Negros Festival, which is also slated in April.
The province has already proven in the Philippine sports history that it’s capable of hosting even international sports.
The province houses a stadium located inside the Panaad Park and Sports Complex that had been used for football matches to include the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship, among others.
The stadium can accommodate 15,500 spectators at the bleachers and approximately 20,000 people in the open field as standing areas.
The stadium also has a rubberized track and field, swimming pool, basketball court and other sports facilities.(PNA)
