MANILA, Oct. 1 — Public storm warning signal no. 1 was raised over the provinces of Zambales and Bataan as tropical storm “Marce” maintains its strength as it moves slowly closer to these areas, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Zambales and Bataan will experience winds of 30 to 60 kph within the next 36 hours.

Weather Forecaster Jun Galang said as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, tropical storm Marce was located at 240 km west of Iba, Zambales (15.4ºN, 117.6ºE) packed with maximum winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.

Galang said Marce is forecast to move slowly south southeast and is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday towards Vietnam.

Galang added that based on the present models, the tropical storm is not expected to make a landfall in any part of the country.

However, he said that those areas within the 400-km diameter of the tropical storm are expected to experience 10 to 25 mm per hour, which is classified as “moderate to intense.”

PAGASA said that Marce continues to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring occasional moderate to heavy rains over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), and Bicol region.

Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the western seaboard of Luzon due to big waves generated by Marce.

The tropical storm is expected to be at 420 km west of Metro Manila by Thursday afternoon and by Friday afternoon at 630 km west of Metro Manila or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

PAGASA said that Bataan and Zambales will experience rains with gusty winds while Metro Manila and Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Bicol region will be cloudy with occasional moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

The rest of Luzon and the whole Visayas have occasional light to moderate rains or thunderstorms while Mindanao will be partly cloudy with brief rainshowers or thunderstorms.

The weather agency said that moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to east will prevail over extreme Northern Luzon and coming from the southwest to south over the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas.

The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest to west with slight to moderate seas. (PNA)
