Army troopers allegedly abduct a farmer in Sorsogon

LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 30 — Suspected army soldiers allegedly abducted a farmer in barangay Balocawe, a hinterland village off Matnog in Sorsogon, an official of Karapatan Bicol said Thursday.

Vince Casilihan, Karapatan Bicol spokesperson said Nilo Garalde, 27, of barangay Majumlad, Matnog, Sorsogon was abducted while gathering copra on Wednesday .

Casilihan, in a text message, said Garalde was with his uncle and cousin when 16 patrolling Army soldiers accosted them and collared Geralde. His uncle and cousin managed to flee.

“We are still looking where he might have been brought by his captors, we don’t know whether he is still alive,” Casilihan said.

Asked to comment on the Karapatan report Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson, in a phone interview said, a platoon of soldiers were indeed on security operation in said village.

Guzman quoting a report from Army Col. Theody Toribio, commander of the 31st Army Battalion in Juban Sorsogon confirmed that the Army troopers indeed confronted Garalde for regular security assessment.

According to Toribio his men let go of Garalde after he was asked a few questions.

Toribio denied the allegation of Casilihan that his men abducted Garalde. Hedirected his men to assist in locating him.(PNA)
