President Benigno S. Aquino III confers the Order of National Artists for Cinema (Posthumous) on the late ‘King of Philippine movies’ Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, popularly known as Fernando Poe Jr., represented by FPJ’s wife-actress Susan Roces, in a ceremony at the Rizal Hall of Malacañang on Thursday (Aug. 16, 2012). Roces refused to accept the posthumous award during a conferment ceremony at Malacañang in June 2006, during the incumbency of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Poe ran against Arroyo in the 2004 presidential elections, the results of which were questioned by FPJ before he passed away on Dec. 14, 2004. Seventy-one dengue patients have been admitted at Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) on Katipunan Ave. cor. J.P. Rizal St. in Project 4, Quezon City as of Thursday (Aug. 16, 2012). With this number of dengue cases, up to four patients have to share one bed. The patients are mostly children aged 5 to 10 years from Quezon City, Antipolo City, Marikina and Pasig. Despite the situation, QMMC officials assure enough supply of medicines for dengue. Dengue cases usually peak during the months of August and September. (PNA photos by Gil S. Calinga)

Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano Soliman and Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim (left photo) watch as some 100 street families around Metro Manila receive their cash grants in the initial implementation of the Expanded Conditional Cash Transfer (ECCT) Project on Thursday (Aug. 16, 2012) at the San Andres Sports Complex in Malate, Manila. ECCT project aims to provide the street families a safe and healthy environment, free from hazards of criminality, pollution, road accidents. A household beneficiary with up to three children will receive cash grant of P1,400 per month. The cash grant will be given on a monthly basis while undergoing case management and preparing them for mainstreaming to the regular Pantawid Pamilya program.
