CANDON CITY, June 12 – Heavy rains did not hinder employees of the local and national government agencies from planting seedlings of various tree species in the watershed of mountainous Barangay Palacapac, Candon City on Tuesday to celebrate the 114th Independence Day here.

Led by Ilocos Sur’s Provincial Board Member Robert Tudayan, the activity successfully planted some 3,500 tree seedlings such as narra, mahogany and fruit trees like mango, rambutan and duhat.

Tudayan said the tree planting in the Palacapac watershed area was started in 2009 and repeated every year during the celebration of the country’s Independence Day every 12th day of June.

"We already planted 15,500 tree seedlings in the area since 2009. However, there are still a lot of areas to be developed here. Thus, after this year’s tree planting, we will again come back to continue planting,” he said.

“I wish to thank all the participants of this year’s tree planting activity for their patience and sacrifice despite the heavy rains,” Tudayan added.

He said that the tree planting was the sole activity of the provincial government during the 114th Philippine Independence Day celebration this year.

Before the tree planting, a flag raising ceremony and wreath-laying at the statues of country’s national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, and Candon local hero, Don Isabelo Abaya, were held at the Freedom Park in Candon City.

The ceremonies were initiated by the Candon City government to commemorate the 114th Independence Day which was participated in by government employees from the various government agencies in the second district of Ilocos Sur.

In her message, Candon City Councilor Rhoda Abrero recalled the heroism of many Filipinos, who sacrificed their lives for the country to win its independence from foreign rule.

“As we celebrated our Independence day, we salute and reminisce the sacrifices made by our heroes who fought for the freedom that we are now enjoying,” she said.

“Therefore, it is but proper for us to nurture this celebration for the future of the next generation," she said.

This year’s Independence Day theme is “Kalayaan Pananagutan ng Bayan para sa Tuwid na Daan". (PNA)
