MANILA, June 12 — As the country celebrated its 114th Independence Day on Tuesday, Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri called on his constituents to continue protecting the "freedom won at so much cost and blood by our valiant heroes and forebears" exemplified by Gat Andres Bonifacio.

“Now that we are free from things that bounded our liberty before, it is our obligation to protect the freedom we have right now. Just like the theme for today’s celebration, 'Kalayaan: Pananagutan ng Bayan para sa Tuwid na Daan'," he said during the Independence Day program held at the Bonifacio Monument in Caloocan.

According to Echiverri, freedom must not be treated as a “trophy” that after claiming as a prize from a battle is just being kept and buried to forgetfulness.

Traffic was temporarily closed in some parts of the Monumento area, including the length of Samson Road going to the Bonifacio Monument and 8th and 9th Avenues, to give way to the Independence Day celebration with Justice Secretary Leila De Lima as guest of honor and speaker. (PNA)
