Russia stays away from Paris meeting on Syria

MOSCOW, April 19 — Russia will not take part in an international ministerial meeting on Syria to be held in Paris on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

“I can confirm that we have received an invitation to this event,” Lukashevich said in a statement published on the Foreign Ministry website. “We have also sent our reply to the French side. It is negative.”

The meeting organizers “apparently had low expectations” Russia would attend, which is why they sent their invitation to Russia “less than 48 hours” before the event, he added.

Foreign ministers from 15 countries are expected to attend the Paris meeting on Syria.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the outbreak of a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad last February, according to UN estimates. (PNA/RIA Novosti)
