Three foreigners sentenced to life term over weapon smuggling in Egypt

CAIRO, March 13 — An Egyptian court sentenced two Israelis and one Ukrainian to life imprisonment over weapons smuggling, court sources told Xinhua Monday.

One of the Israelis was arrested on Oct. 2 last year while crossing the Taba border terminal from Israel into Egypt, hiding an automatic rifle and 59 bullets in a wooden case, according to the sources.

The Ukrainian national, a manager of a tourist company in Egypt 's Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, has asked one Israeli to send him some weapons, the sources said.

One of the two Israelis was tried in absentia.

The South Sinai Criminal Court of Egypt meanwhile fined the three a total of 189,000 Egyptian pounds (about 31,500 U.S. dollars). (PNA/Xinhua) RSV/mmg
