MANILA, March 3 – The Quezon City government is speeding up road widening projects in the city, especially in Novaliches district, so that travel time will be easy and convenient, Mayor Herbert M. Bautista said on Saturday.

Bautista assured residents and the business sector that the city administration has already coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to work on the congestion of traffic in major thoroughfares of the city, particularly the C-5 Mindanao Ave. and Quirino Highway area in Novaliches.

Bautista made the statement at the sidelines of the unveiling of the new historical marker of national hero Melchora “Tandang Sora” Aquino at the Tandang Sora National Shrine (TSNS) in Upper Banlat, Novaliches Saturday morning.

“In fact, on my way here, the traffic was so bad at the approach from C-5 Mindanao Ave. near North Luzon Expressway due to the U-turn slot at the boundary of Quezon City and Valenzuela City,” Bautista told the Philippines News Agency.

He said the U-turn slot is already a gridlock, especially during rush hours. He noted that many trucks use it, causing a bottleneck.

The mayor said he was already informed by Novaliches residents of the gridlock on the entire stretch of Quirino Highway in Novaliches, especially during rush hours, and also whenever there are fires or road accidents.

Bautista said among the projects are road widening in Don Mariano Marcos Ave. (Commonwealth) and Quirino Highway, road repairs along E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave. in Cubao, Katipunan Ave. in Loyola Heights and Sto. Domingo St. in Del Monte.

He added they will focus on widening the Quirino Highway, General Luis St. in Novaliches Proper and IBP Road in Batasan Hills, Novaliches.

During a recent fire near a biscuit factory on Gen. Luis St., fire trucks had a hard time responding due to the narrow road.

At present, Bautista said the road widening of Quirino Highway and Gen. Luis St. has started. He added that owners of some business establishments affected have been asked to voluntarily vacate their areas to give way to the road improvement.

Once the project in Quirino Highway, which will start from Mindanao Ave. to Sauyo Road, is completed, there will be two additional lanes that motorists can utilize and these will ease the traffic woes in the area.

On IBP Road, the widening is initiated by House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. to ease traffic flow, especially during rush hours, from Filinvest I to Sinagtala, the city official said.

The IBP Road widening is also necessary to give way to the proposed Batasan General Hospital which the city government will construct to augment the local health facilities in District 2. (PNA) scs/JCA
