President Aquino unveils Cardinal Sin statue

MANILA, Feb. 25 – President Benigno C. Aquino III unveiled Saturday a statue of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, a key player of the EDSA People Power 1 revolution, near the Luneta Park in Manila.

The unveiling was among the activities marking the 26th anniversary of the EDSA-1 People Power revolution.

Some roads in the city were closed to traffic for the event. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said these roads were closed from 8 a.m. onwards, and advised motorists and commuters to take alternate routes.

Historians said events in the Philippines under then President Ferdinand Marcos forced Cardinal Sin, the spiritual leader of Filipino Catholics, to become involved in the politics of the country.

Cardinal Sin became witness to alleged corruption, fraud and even murder at the hands of the regime — events that pushed Filipinos to the brink of civil unrest.

Cardinal Sin appealed to Filipinos of all religions to follow the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels and use peaceful means to change the political situation in the Philippines. (PNA) RMA/JCA
