MANILA, Feb. 8 – The Senate, sitting as impeachment court, denied on Wednesday the motion of the prosecution requesting to subpoena four justices of the Supreme Court in the ongoing trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

“The court resolves to deny the request,” Senate Secretary-clerk of court Emma Reyes read from the Senate ruling on the request for subpoena.

The prosecution requested Associate Justices Martin Villarama, Maria Lourdes Sereno, Bienvenido Reyes and Presbitero Velasco Jr. to appear before the impeachment court.

“This court has no authority to disregard rules promulgated by the Supreme Court in the exercise of its constitutional rule-making power,” the Senate ruling said.

Senator-judges Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III, Francis ‘Kiko’ Pangilinan, Alan Peter Cayetano and Pia Cayetano supported the ruling but to file separate concurring opinion. (PNA) RMA/jfm
