MANILA, Jan. 26 -– The Department of National Defense (DND) said Thursday there are plans for a revitalized joint Philippine-United States military exercise at the West Philippine Sea.

DND spokesman Peter Paul Galvez said these training and exercises will benefit the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) troops in terms of new knowledge, learning new techniques to fight terrorism and anti-piracy as well as on how to operate new equipment," Galvez said during a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Galvez said among the options under consideration are operating Navy ships from the Philippines, deploying troops on a rotational basis and staging more frequent joint exercises,

He said priority is to strengthen maritime defenses, especially near the South China Sea. They indicated a willingness to host U.S. ships and surveillance aircraft.

Galvez said the US military assists them on maritime awareness through information sharing.

Galvez said a bilateral meeting with US counterparts is set sometime late January. Agenda is territorial defense, maritime security disaster preparedness and cyber security. (PNA) DCT/JCA
