1,900-hectare rice farms damaged in rat infestation

CAUAYAN CITY, Jan. 12 — At least 1,890 hectares of rice farms have been affected due to the onslaught of rats in 24 out of 65 villages in this city.

Cauayan City agriculturist Rufino Arcega said they have been implementing mitigation measures such as having rat-baiting to minimize the production losses of farmers.

Arcega said he has relayed the problem to City Mayor Benjamin Dy who immediately asked for the buying of rodenticides and other farm rat killers.

Arcega said that there must be mass-baiting among farmers so that the rats will not just transfer from one farm to another.

The rat infestation has also added woes to farmers due to past typhoons and floods, he added. (PNA) LAP/scd/Bill Ventura/mba/mec
